Changing The Oil

Changing The Oil in a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

a.) STP Oil Filter S9018R.
b.) STP Air Filter SA9969
c.) STP 5W-30 Conventional Engine Oil 5 Quart.  STPCON5w305Q
HOW TO change the oil in the chevy cobalt 2005.
Need:
15mm socket wrench (turn towards passenger tire.
a 32mm socket (6 point oil filter cap removal)
5 quarts oil.
paper oil filter type.
add part numbers for filter.
Run the car for 10 minutes to warm up the oil, so it will run smoothly out the plug hole.  Cold (very cold) oil doesn't flow, is a glob not a liquid.

1.) Requires a 15MM wrench or socket to remove the screw and drain the oil.

1a.) The screw is directly under the car in the middle on the 'square' shaped box located closest to the front of the car, that is the oil pan, pretty much in the middle of the car under the engine grey box with bolts all around it, behind that further towards the windshield is another similar looking oil pan black looking more wide and nearer to the firewall.  The screw is located between the 2 of these pans on the back of the front grey pan box one.

1b.) Turn the screw up towards the passenger tire to loosen, from the bottom turn up towards the tire, pull down and around from passenger to driver side to tighten.

1c.) The screw is long and has to be turned many times (5-6-7) before oil begins to flow.  Did not travel very far.

1d.) It is pretty easy to get under the front of the car to do this using a jack and jack stands on the front sides.  Getting to the area from the side of the car where the jack stands are the area with jack and stands is not possible.  Need the yellow stands to be 3 high and that will seem low, but can access area from the front of car.

2.) Requires a 32MM socket.... also called. (1/2 inch drive by 32mm socket?) socket 6 point low profile, oil filter wrench, housing canister cap socket.  To remove the oil filter cap under the hood in the top of the engine bay.  Located behind the dip stick.

2a.) Alternative way is to use an adjustable wrench, the type with a single handle and screw to spin for adjustment not the small normal size one that came in the tool box need a large one, and open it to about the size of a pinky finger from nail to middle bone, and then slide a socket wrench extension pole through the hole at the top of it (if there is one) and turn that.  When it does start to turn you will bust your right pointer finger middle bone.  The double handle type adjustable pliers would not work so well to loosen the oil filter housing cap.

2b.) The oil filter is a paper filter type that fits into a canister housing.. and is located top side of the engine behind the oil dipstick.  The top of it is the black circle cap with a square 6 point box on the top.  The lower part is built into the engine metal.  (There is a lot of other stuff in the area here vicinity, so getting any other type of tool in is nearly impossible.  A short handle wrench that can open up wide enough might turn just a little bit in the space.

2c.) There is a oil filter o-ring, put on it when replacing the old filter.  should be included in the new filter box.  Is large ring the size of the filter not a tiny o-ring.

3.) Requires 5 quarts of oil.

4.) Unplug the oil fuel or something fuse relay located in the fuse box located under the hood, on the right.  be sure to make note of EXACTLY where it came from and count the spaces, do not reinstall into the wrong plug holes or (backwards? not sure if that matters most likely it does)
...WHY.... because there is no oil in the oil filter, and so if you just start the car it will run without oil, and so by disconnecting the fuel, the car won't start, but the oil will be pumped, and thereby reduce the friction of starting without oil in the system.
STEP 1.) Disconnect relay
STEP 2.) Turn the key to start the car, turn off, turn on, etc...

5.) Once complete, press both of the buttons on the dash next to the steering wheel for 5 seconds and that will reset the oil life digital reading seen on the dashboard.  Press the right one to cycle.
(This is used on a chevy cobalt to remove the black cap on the top of the oil filter housing, there is a black 'square' on the top this fits on.  Filter is located under the top engine plastic cover, in the middle of the car, next to the oil dip stick tube and stick.)

add-synthetic versus normal oil.... one is for cold weather another for whatever.
royal purple, and ams oil both clean the engine good, but remove it once it is in for a very brief time, 1 day. if you engine is shit.
