Wiper Remover 2005 Chevy Cobalt, cover, water deflector, floor carpet wet leaking fix

So you decided to remove your wind shield wiper stalk

Want To See An Old Post Read this also, [link] "Front Wet Floorboards, Carpet"
but this post now here you are reading now explains how to do the fix and info about why it is leaking, see pics here also.

You will need a wind shield wiper remover tool such as shown below available on Amazon.

STEP ONE:
1.)  Use a flat head screwdriver to work the top plastic cover off the wiper.  You can use a tiny hook type tool and insert it to yank it off.

2.)  Unscrew the bolt nut under that cover holding the wiper blade stalk down.

3.)  Optional -
(a) Make a mark with 'white out' or a marker or something so you can realign the stalk arm on the wiper bolt stalk since the wiper bolt stalk has a lot of grooves in it like a nut bolt has 6 sides this stalk arm connects by sliding over the stalk arm bolt with 50 tiny slots so it is best practice to try to keep the alignment correct best you can.
(b) You can put a piece of tape under the actual wiper on the window so that when you go back it lines up and rests again on the tape line in the same location.  Otherwise it will be slightly higher or lower than the tape line.

4.)
(a) Place the wiper remover under the driver side wiper and screw it down on the middle of bolt stalk and in just a few twists it will pop free, keep spinning though so that it gets raised some more for easier removal.

(b) Raise the hood to get access to the passenger side with the wiper remover.  Place it under the wiper stalk and twist it off like in (a) going to have to close the hood down after wards pretty much.

5.)  To remove the plastic cover that runs the length of the hood, that plastic cover that is under the wiper that rains runs off and has the wiper washer fluid sprayer built into it.
(a) That plastic cover has two insert type of retainers one on each side.  You need a flat head type screwdriver pretty much to get the top started to pull the middle plunger of the retainer upwards so that the entire retainer clip insert bit can be pulled out.  You could prey the plunger with your fingertip if you don't have a flat head screwdriver.

(b)  The plunger retainers are located on the outside area of each side of the car in the same location as saying nearby the mirrors, that is on the far side of each side, and since the entire plastic cover is a hand size cover you will see it on the outer most side about a fingers length in in the middle.

(c)  Pop off those two retainers, then be careful to not try to "remove" the entire cover as the wiper fluid tube to the water fluid canister container is connected to the wiper fluid sprayers with a long tube that is on the driver side running past the fuse box from the canister to the outside area of the hood on the driver side then crosses towards a middle area from the side of the driver side of the car.

Anyway, once you actually lift the cover you will see this tube connection easily where it is going to and coming from so just lift the cover off and set in top of the engine with the fluid tube still connected.  You could possibly disconnect the tube there appears to be a connection in the middle area nearby the fuse box halfway between the canister and cover.  I have no idea how to disconnect it but there is a tiny connection made of plastic of some sort.

6.)  Now looking left on the passenger side up by the dash under the window you will see a large gap or a large black plastic cover.  If that cover is not connected well your car will leak water when it rains which will run down through the cabin air filter behind the glove box, making the passenger side of the car wet and a bad smell.

7.)  There is a rubber sponge like cover running the length of the entire plastic cover you just removed and so if you want to drive to the dealer or auto parts store or otherwise, you can put the cover back but set aside the rubber sponge (the name I forget).  Point is I did this until the part arrived and the hood closed.  There are metal retainer clips on the bottom of this cover as well like any interior plastic piece you have to yank on to remove.

That white thing inside the white plastic ring is the cabin air filter.  When the black plastic rubber cover deflector is missing the water just runs down the window and directly into the air box into the air filter and on to your floor.

2005 Chevy Cobalt Water Rain Deflector as of 2022.
Had water on the passenger side floor carpet.  Even got to the driver side one day.

The part number of this deflector is: 15296710

Deflector, Air Inl Grl PNL Wat
For: A (2005 - 2006)
Wiper System / Windshield

The GM Chevy Cobalt (Pontiac G5, or Pontiac Pursuit) under the hood water deflector comes with a bead of 'glue' already on it just press down firm to install.  I also used some red "RTV" high heat sealant silicone at the top.  Took from 2005 to 2021 for the deflector to need to be replaced.  It is a flexible plastic sheet cost about $10.  Getting the wipers off is the hard part.

There is some sort of 'goo' that is used to make this item stick to the metal.  Like high heat RTV sealant might work but you'll likely want some form of automotive goo for under the hood because of the heat.

The actual dimensions are offset.  It is not flat.  It is higher on the top and warps down so you can't just stick something flat on there.  You can find a rubber type of "diaphragm" of some sort at automotive shops I saw in a youtube video about this as it applies to all Chevy and GMC vehicles made this way leaking water on the floor.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Alternative cause of water on floor in a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt water on the passenger side carpet cause can be to check the area under the windshield washers under the large plastic cover that runs the entire dash on the outside that rain water falls on there is a large hole in the body frame of the car up under there on the passenger side there that has a rubber diaphragm that gets old and leaks or falls into the large metal hole there and or leaks water, it is a straight drop into your cabin air filter for water if the plastic rubber diaphragm is old and water will go right in the glove box on the air filter and so when it rains the carpet gets wet.  To inspect you need to remove the windshield washers with a special tool on amazon to make things easy, linked here,
[FIRSTINFO Light Windshield Wiper Arm Puller/Removal Tool (Fit Opening dimension: 0.59 Inch (15.2mm) Internal Height: Approx. 1.06" (27.2mm)][Model Number: F3391]
use this tool to remove the wipers easily, just spin the thing a few times and the wiper pops off then step two lift up the plastic cover there is a plastic retainer type of plunger plug insert on the outside of each side of the plastic cover looking down at the plastic cover, lift those out first then lift off the cover.  The washer fluid line is attached so you need to rest it on the engine not totally off the vehicle unless you disconnect the washer fluid line.  You'll see it when you start to lift the plastic cover how it runs and where is connects.
Now that the cover is off and set aside on the left side, the passenger side up close to the windshield there is a large rectangular hole and or plastic cover about as wide as a paper towel.  If your plastic rubber cover is old and leaking replace it and or you may find it stuffed inside the hole from falling into the hole being old.  The replacement is called a "deflector" [part number: 15296710] GM, GMC, Chevrolet, Pontiac parts dealers have it.  It's a common issue on these vehicles with age leaking water.  There is an automotive glue 'goo' silicone adhesive high heat application required of some kind that needs to be used to secure your new deflector to the body.  It is a hole that is tilted some with the body of the car and not flat so you can't use any flat random piece of anything to re-cover the hole but auto parts stores do carry a diaphragm sheet in a roll of a rubber plastic as I saw in one video fix for this.  You can maybe use high heat RTV silicone which is pretty common.  Not sure what the manufacturer goo is called.  Whatever it is this will stop water leaking if it is the cause.  Basically like having the sunroof open if that deflector isn't there.
See this blog post for pictures and a more detailed how to.
