How to reset transmission adaptive learning:
For a 2005 Chevy Cobalt (4T40-E / 4T45-E automatic), the proper way to reset transmission adaptive learning is with a capable scan tool.
Official GM Method
According to the factory service information for the 2005 Cobalt:
Connect a scan tool that can access transmission special functions (basic code readers usually cannot do this).
Go to: Special Functions → Transmission Output Controls → Reset Transmission Adapts.
Perform the reset. This clears the Transmission Adaptive Pressure (TAP) values back to the base calibration.
This is the method GM specifies when the transmission has been overhauled or replaced. Resetting the TAP values erases the learned pressure adjustments the computer made over time to compensate for clutch wear, seal condition, etc.
Important Notes
