2005 Chevy Cobalt Radio & Speakers Install
THIS IS A LONG AND ELABORATE "HOW TO" THAT YOU CAN 100% COPY KNOWING HOW TO YOURSELF BY THE END WITH MANY PICTURES AND IN DEPTH DESCRIPTIONS. YOU'LL WANT TO SCROLL THROUGH TO THE BOTTOM TO UNDERSTAND WHAT ALL IS HERE FIRST.
Taking off the door panels is easy once you get the door handle off and using a door handle remover helps but there other ways. Taking off the rear panels and deck cover is easy but mildly annoying. Taking off the dash trim is easy with a slim tool. Just need a few screw drivers and socket set basically for the various screw sizes and bolts. A door handle tool or way to get behind it and a trim removal tool. A wire cutter will help with the wiring but may be unnecessary.

2005 Chevy Cobalt on 18" rims and might be on Eibach Sportline Springs
This picture shows a cobalt with the dash trim kit installed with the slim black housing for the radio.
There are other versions of the trim I think but not many and you can mount a radio without the trim but have a gap if you had to if the radio comes with a mounting plate bracket. See the 4 screw holes on the sides in the picture above. Either way the radio or the trim screws in there.

GM factory antenna with mini "barbless" or "barbed" plug to aftermarket radio
GM factory antenna with mini barbedor barbless plug for aftermarket radio
> (Why?)
This is needed for the "radio" (as in the radio antenna - radio stations radio) if your new stereo head unit (radio) doesn't have a similar sized hole to plug the radio cable in the cobalt that is the proper size because the original GM radio wire plug end is slim but a aftermarket radio uses a larger hole so this adapter makes the slim larger to fit so you can listen to the radio stations in your area.

>(Why?)
You don't "need" this but it makes it so you can leave the radio on when the car is turned off before you open the door. "Allegedly." May depend on your radio not sure? Also other things explained above^
This product is an "optional" addition to the wiring harness replacement and also wires into the replacement wiring harness. If your radio doesn't come with a wiring harness buy 1 or good luck figuring out the wiring for the existing harness if it would even work if there is no plastic adapter to connect the old harness to the new harness as if the back of the new radio just ends with loose wires coming out of its harness that is already plugged in, so you want dual adapters one for the radio to be plugged in and then at the end of that there to be another plug to plug in the stock GM harness that was taken out of the back of your stock radio, and then this PAC harness connects to the new radio harness.
So you would have - adapter - to - adapter - to - adapter - to radio. Or stock radio wires cut off the adapter then spliced into new radio wires which then plugs into the radio plus this PAC harness in between.
Wiring bundles come with color coded wires and a wiring diagram if you buy a radio which also the wires have words on them you may get confused only by the parking brake wire or something like that which you can look up a video to determine which blue or grey or purple wire it is supposed to connect to (if it is supposed to be connected at all) otherwise it is left speaker, right, front back, power, etc... I forget which wasn't made perfectly clear like the rest of them. (Reverse input and antenna input are shown in the picture below all the way at the bottom of this post here, the picture above here has a parking brake interrupt not yet hooked up that allows for video to be played while driving which is an extra purchase on ebay). See next item below.

RADIO WIRING KIT FOR "BRAKE BYPASS" TO WATCH A DVD WHILE MOVING:
DIYBypass Parking Brake Bypass Fits Boss A B BE BV BI Sony XAV BT SXM Override

>(Why?)
Parking brake bypass for radio head unit to play DVD while driving.
This version constantly pings with 3 pulses or something like that and other types ping once or something like that. No idea. Read the description(s) on ebay if it matters. Seems there was a reason when the seller explained it for this type that does 3 pulses. The radio will say you can't play a DVD unless the car is in park and the parking brake is pulled so this makes it so you can.
This is the HOW TO that came with the parking brake bypass interrupt wire.

Just unscrew the top black screw.
KENWOOD KFC-1666S Car Stereo Speaker 6-1/2" 2-Way Speakers
Scosche SAGMHR634 6.5”-6.75” Speaker Adapters
+plus 4 screws and washers inside I had to purchase explained below.
Stock 2005 Chevy Cobalt front door speaker with stock mount.
Just unscrew the top black screw, it tilts forward and lifts out, has a tab on the bottom.
HOW TO: The front speaker adapter uses the stock black screw located at the top of the adapter seen in the picture. Simply plug in the wiring connector to the back of the speaker and drop it in there is a lip on the bottom that seats in the door then screw in the stock top screw.
The thing here with all those silver screws is to take the plastic Scosche speaker adapter to Home Depot and fit the screws and washers till you find the perfect size which is pretty small since it sits directly behind the screw (or use a nut and bolt combo) in the picture deep down inside the cup shape right up to where the screw is showing in the picture so that screw isn't going any long distance just enough to get behind and pass the washer, then I used a "lock washer" also which looks like a gear with teeth, think it was an outside gear shape not inside they have both types.
All this hardware Home Depot has a row of various similar sizes in bags or loose with like 10 in a bag but you can buy the wrong size which is just slightly too large of a washer that won't seat in the plastic since it shaped like a coffee cup inside you need to get all the way to the bottom of the cup. There are some loose screws and washers under the row of bags or check the drawers at the end of the alley to find the size you need it is small finger nail size. Lowes is basically the same as Home Depot or try Harbor Freight. Also get the wiring connectors.

I'll check the receipt (one day) to find out what sizes I used.
The door you unscrew the screws under the door handle cover on the door that you pull to close the door in the middle. You unscrew another screw or 2 around the panel like behind the door latch there is a plastic cover to also pop off then 2 screws there (I think its 2 there). Then on the side of the panel is a small plastic push in clip you need to work it outwards then pull on it, a "paper clip" will help to get it started then I think there is 1 more screw in the side and the rest is just pulling the plastic pokey tabs on the front and bottom and yanking backwards. BUT BE AWARE!
There is a door latch cable you need to disconnect while holding the panel free, (lift it over the door lock push first and raise the panel upwards some get over the door lock) it is a cable inserted into a tiny hole (pain in the ass to reinstall) you pop that up and out then the entire panel is free.
I think? ...There a good YouTube video on it, not so much on the rear deck, but the 1 rear deck I found was good enough to follow. Reinstall of the side panel in the rear is also a pain in the ass. Make note of how you yanked them out so you can do the opposite to pop them back in. The rear deck cover will need to be lifted over and placed on the back of the rear seat which is down forward.
Door latch wire removal to get door panel off, pull up this wire with a post on the end.
The entire plastic latch box remains on the panel and the wire bundle you just removed remains attached to the door inside hanging.
The door latch wire bundle is the top thing wrapped in a paper towel.
other side no paper towel covering the door latch wire.
Same rust problem on both door handles. You can remove it, lift the plastic cover, remove the 2 bolts and de-rust it. Then put the plastic back down no problem, no need for new glue.
Assuming you remove the rust you need to paint it asap or it will rust all over again, especially if you use a rust remover, instead of a wire brush and drill I guess. I used rust remover and it looked good for 1 day but by day 2 it was rusted even worse than before. FYI.
You may want to scour sanding the metal then prime it, so use a drill and disc anyways or sandpaper, so the prime sticks to the metal, then paint it.
> FYI rust remover is highly toxic.<
Bite the bullet and use a drill with a sanding pad which would seemingly also scour the metal in the process so win-win.
Then prime it, paint it.
If you use a water type rust remover you then are smelling it, handling it, need to dispose of it, (put back in jug) or you can paint it on, wash it off, depends the type, etc...
read the warnings says wear a official breathing mask not the slim paper type with some types of rust remover, gloves, ventilated area, etc..
So if doing it with a drill you can remove the rust on the head rests also.
Rear seat head rest rust. Covered up by a plastic cap.

Dorman 76951 Window Handle Removal Tool Universal Fit
$8.99
Ideal for upholstery, glass, stereo, electrical and paint/body jobs
Durable metal construction for a long service life
Universal fit for a broad range of applications
Easy to use
Product Description
Dorman's Window Handle Remover safely and effectively removes the clips that secure manual window handles to inner door panels. Replacement retainer clips are also available for most applications.
You push this tool behind the window crank from the crank side where the little spinning handle is you put your hand on to crank the window, towards the part that is connected to the door, do this to pop off the metal piece in the circle that holds it to the door. You could potentially pop it out with a slim tool and yank on it. It is a little metal piece in a "U" shape that needs to be yanked out like a metal t-shirt hanger in the head hole gets pulled out. Its a thick piece of metal that needs to be popped, pushed out or pulled on. Like with a small screw driver I saw in a video. This tool is single use for removal only you put it flat on the door in the middle of the door and push to get the metal clasp free so the handle falls off. To replace reinstall the metal clasp and push crank on. You need to do it from the middle of the door due to the plastic door curving. You're trying to hit the end pieces of the clasp in the picture above you can see the end a tiny metal silver sliver showing on the top side, this tool rams that out, makes sense when you see the tool picture and know the clasp is a half U shape. Point is to push from the normal spinning handle side all the way under that entire span of plastic to the circle holding it to the door and not from the edge of the edge of the plastic circle. Another way to say it is to "go all the way down the arm" to the elbow.
See YouTube videos how to do it with no tool, here you can see how it is placed before removal so this picture has the clasp reinstalled. If using a paper clip which is what it looks like in the picture plan on bending two of them it is "snapped" in there tight.

REAR SPEAKERS + (REAR SPEAKERS THAT DIDN'T FIT)
THE REAR DECK SPEAKERS
The front door speakers are 6.5" (other size can fit depending on how) and the rear speakers are 6x9" but you need to get rear speakers that properly fit in the hole which is a "shallow" hole straight through to the trunk and not "deep" or "wide" hole (see picture) so you could buy 6x9 speakers try to install them and find that the rear "metal frame" of the speaker will not fit (the back side with the magnet) that entire width and depth of the metal speaker frame won't allow it to seat in the hole, the speaker hangs freely in the trunk. You can access and disconnect the wires for it from the trunk or just lift it up during removal. The metal frame is the issue with some speakers having adapters used I saw at least 1 cobalt with a 6x9 adapter used. Not sure how seems it would need to be smaller 6x9 or would seat higher?

Metra 72-4568 Speaker Connector Adapter for Select 1984-2013 GM Vehicles (pair)
$9.95
You "need" 4 of these total one for each speaker - unless you cut the wires - when removing the stock speakers these make it a quick plug and play swap. Install the red connector on the speaker then plug in the existing GM wire connector to these. You can install the rear speakers and not have these then just pop the trunk and install later if they do not arrive in time as the bottom of the speaker is accessible from the trunk space to do this.
End result is a short cable with an adapter that clips into the old GM wire thing easy.
Otherwise save a couple bucks and cut the old GM wire thing off the wires and figure out a way to wire it to your speaker. You'd still likely need the red thing, which would come bundled with your new speakers.

Use the holes in a wire cutter tool to slide off the ends of the wires
since they are already pre-clipped at the end then twist them together.
You need to watch a few videos on how to remove the dash trim, how to remove the front door, and how to remove the rear deck, which includes having to take off the rear plastic cover panels on the top left and right by the rear window and the rear plastic next to the rear seat between the seat and door, plus the head rests so you can lift the rear deck cover up, but it remains in the back on the rear seats folded down because the seat belts keep it from being removed entirely.
Other than all the pulling off plastic panels everywhere it is just a few screws for the speakers and radio.

My remote is differently shaped and has rubber buttons. Like the one in the picture with the box.
Talking through your cell phone via the radio is picked up by the radio microphone but it is very low volume to the person listening.
Seems that my battery is now not wanting to start the car easily has to crank over many times or maybe the alternator has too much drain on it from the added tech here.
radio, pac, brake interruptor may need to be wired with a diod but the seller said not with this radio, might be draining my battery.
Note nothing is hard wired so the radio wiring can just be disconnected from the stock harness to the new wiring harness adapter and then reinstall the old radio.
The stock radio will not power the speakers well without any amp but should "work."
Not all the aftermarket wiring wires were connected and there is a black plug also
not sure what plugs in it, boss manual likely explains. Camera? Has a camera wire also.
For dash cam and reverse cam.
If you read up on dash cam wiring that is an entire thing of its own to read up on needing to splice all kinds of wires just in general to do it to give it power and connect the video to radio, this radio will also do backup camera in reverse and maybe show it while driving.

Overall now the sound is just "normal" car speakers.
